International Women’s Day Celebrations - 2023
On March 16, 2023, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences marked International Women's Day with a grand celebration. The institution's management, in collaboration with the Women Empowerment Cell, orchestrated a series of noteworthy activities. True to tradition, accomplished women from diverse walks of life were carefully selected for recognition, and awards were bestowed upon them during this memorable occasion. The festivities commence with an enthralling performance by our talented students, followed by a warm welcome address from our Registrar, Dr. Sheeja Varghese. The chief guest of the event, Smt. Sharanya Ari IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Education at the Greater Chennai Corporation, India, graced us with her presence. Dr. Shubra Dutta, Solutions Consultant at Elsevier, was the esteemed Guest of Honour. Under the distinguished patronage of Dr. Shanthipriya, Founder of SAAR Foundation, several notable awards were presented by the chief guest and our Dean. These awards celebrated women who have made their mark in various domains.
Inspiring Women Icon: Dr. Shanthipriya, Founder of SAAR Foundation. Women Entrepreneur Award: Ms. Saranya Rajendran, Founder of Thinai Organics. Social Activist Award: Ms. Abi Shankari, Lions Quest National Trainer, and Founder of Margadarsi Counseling and Training Centre, Chennai. Scientific Excellence Award: Prof. Anuradha Dhanasekaran, Professor at the Centre for Biotechnology, Anna University. Health Care Excellence Award: Dr. Republica Sridhar, RMD Multispeciality Hospital. Teaching Excellence Award: Dr. Shyamala Chandrasekar, Professor of Orthodontics.
Each awardee had the opportunity to address the audience, sharing their personal experiences and imparting words of wisdom that left a profound impact on everyone present, inspiring and motivating all in attendance.
The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Lakshmi Thangavelu, Dean of International Affairs. As a special token of appreciation, the management also distributed gifts to all the women on the non-teaching staff at the institution.

As is the norm, women achievers in their respective spheres of life were identified and hand picked for recognition and awards were given away on this day. The event began with a welcome dance by our students and a welcome address by our Dean Dr. Sheeja Varghese. The chief guest of the event was Dr Anita Aggarwal Scientist F , Technology development Transfer DST , Govt of India.

The Scientific Excellence Award, Dr. Dakshina Moorthy Janani Geneticist, Certified Genetic Counselor and Founder GeneAura Pvt Ltd, Chennai. The Health Care Excellence Award , Dr Ezhilarasi Consultant Pediatrician Medical Director , EKAM Foundation. The Teaching Excellence Award Dr. S. Mahalaxmi SRM Dental College & Hospital ,Chennai.
All the awardees addressed the gathering and shared their own experiences and words of wisdom that were certainly very inspiring and motivational to the entire group of audience.

The chief guest of the event was Ms. Madhu Saran (Entrepreneur, Social Activist, Founder - River NGO) and our Guest of Honour was Dr. Srimathy Kesan (Founder, CEO - Space Kids, India). They graced the occasion, addressed the gathering and gave away the awards.
The following awards were given by the chief guest, guest of honour and our Dean. The TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD was given to Dr. Thangam Menon, Retd. Prof & Head, Microbiology, DR. ALM PG IBMS, UNOM. The HEALTHCARE EXCELLENCE AWARD was presented to Dr. Renuka Ramakrishnan, Senior Consultant, Dermatologist & Leprologist, Social Activist for her yeoman service for the poor and needy in the field of skin care and leprosy. The SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE AWARD was given to Dr. P Kalaiselvi, Associate Professor, Medical biochemistry, Dr. ALM PG IBMS , University of Madras. The SOCIAL ACTIVIST AWARD was presented to Ms. Aditi Madhusudhan, Animal & Social Welfare Activist. The COMMUNITY STAR AWARD was given to Ms. Varsha Aswani, Founder, Born To Win Research Foundation Trust. The INSPIRING WOMEN ICON AWARD was presented to Ms. Preethi Daniel, Group HR Manager, Software Firm, Chennai. And lastly, The WOMEN ENTREPRENEUR AWARD was presented to Ms. Kadambari U, Founder - Women Entrepreneurship Development Organisation (WEDO). All the awardees addressed the gathering and shared their own experiences and words of wisdom that were certainly very inspiring and motivational to the entire group of audience.

International Women’s Day Celebrations - 2020
The International women’s day was celebrated on 14th March 2020 by the management in co-ordination with the Women Empowerment Cell of Saveetha Dental College to recognise the contribution and significance of women in various fields. As per the norm, women achievers in their respective spheres of life were identified and hand picked for recognition and awards were given away on this day. The event began with a welcome dance by our students and a welcome address by our Dean Dr. Sheeja Varghese. The chief guest of the day was Dr. Vijaya Bharathi (B.Sc (Hons), MBA (Canada), BDS), Director of Sundaram Medical Foundation and the Guest of Honour was Dr. T.S. Padmalakshmi, Additional Director, CGHS, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India. They graced the occasion and gave away the awards to the women icon of the year 2020 on various categories. Dr. Vijaya Bharathi addressed the gathering and spoke about the level of efficiency women can exhibit in given opportunity. Dr. T.S. Padmalakshmi were full of praise about the achievements of empowered women army of Saveetha Dental College.
The awardees were felicitated by the Chief Guest, the Guest of Honour and our Dean. The first award of the day was the Young Achiever’s award and was given to Selvi. Hanshini Mathan Rajan, 10 year old, a budding Table Tennis player who have won many medals and trophies in both National and International Tournaments. She is currently ranking No:1 at national level under 12 category. She represented India at Swedish Junior and Cadet Open organized by International Table Tennis Federation in Sweden and won Bronze medal at her first appearance. She is considered as table tennis prodigy and a medal prospect for Olympics 2028.
The next award was the Community Star Award for Dr. Vandhana Gopikumar, the Co- founder of The Banyan Academy and Sundram Fasteners Centre for Social Action and Research. She has been acknowledged for her tireless effort towards the development of adaptive mental health system for homeless mental disorder individuals. Their system was built on the theme on dignity, empathy, empowerment and freedom. Over the past 25 years, she and her team have helped more than ten thousand people with mental health issues in India to reintegrate into society. She received Penn Nursing Renfield Foundation Award, 2018 for Global Women’s Health for her work in helping women with mental health problems in India
The next award was the Social Activist Award, presented to Dr. Anuradha (B S Opt, Ph. D. FBDO, FAAO), currently the Head of Programs for Community outreach, and School children eye health at Sankara Nethralaya eye hospital, Chennai. She is also a Professor at Elite School of Optometry (ESO), an academic unit of Sankara Nethralaya. She has authored books on optometry education, school children screening and contributed chapter on occupational optometry apart from the publications and conference presentations. Under her leadership ESO achieved the LIMCA record of screening 8469 children in one day. She has coordinated the screening for 279,823 school children between 2011-2017. She was instrumental in Sankara Nethralaya receiving the ‘SN Shah Vision 2020 award’ for her services towards woman and children eye health. She is the recipient of the Best Researcher in Optometry”–Dr Narasimhan Memorial Award and Best Researcher - Clinical Science in ophthalmology”-Ruby Banik Award 2016-17. She is the Nehru-Fulbright Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) awardee for the year 2014. She thanked the organistion for honouring her and gave an awareness speech on prevalence of myopia in current younger generation due to addiction and prolonged usage of smart phones.
The women entrepreneur award was presented to Dr. Rachana Dave, the Founder of MicroGO- a R&D based manufacturing company based out of Chennai. Dr. Dave holds Ph.D in microbiology and did her P. Doc at the NYU, USA. She joined Bhabha Atomic Research Centre as a staff scientist in 2010.She has published 10 Peer review papers and patents (all granted). She established MicroGo in 2016. MicroGo believes in the power of micro swachhta and all their technologies follow SAFE-SAVE mantra- Keeping lives SAFE and SAVE valuable resources. At present the company is rapidly serving Public Health during the COVID-19 crisis. With her enthralled speech she encouraged the students to follow their dreams and excel.
The Healthcare Excellence award was given to Dr. Selvi Radhakrishna (MBBS, FRCS, DNB), leading consultant Oncoplastic surgeon at Chennai Breast Centre. Dr. Selvi Radhakrishna is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of Molecular Medicine in St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences. She runs a trust called Sharana breast Cancer Relief and Research Foundation, a non- profitable, charitable, non- governmental organization. She is also the co- founder of Penn Nalam. She has also authored “All About Breast Cancer”, “Breast Diseases- Imaging and Clinical Management” and “Breast Cancer”- Handbook in Tamil. She has made several presentations in national and international meetings on breast cancer and has many publications in the subject of breast cancer and breast imagings.
The last award but by no means the least, was the Scientific Excellence Award, presented to Dr. Gnanamani (M,Sc, Ph.d), Senior Principal Scientist in Central Leather Research Institute. She is an Associate Professor in Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, New Delhi. She has more than 15 years of Academic and research experience. She has received numerous awards like SKOCH Order of Merit Award for the Technology Developed, Adarsh Vidya Saraswati Rashtriya Puraskar Award, Fellow of International Medical Sciences Academy (FIMSA), Best Women Scientist award from National Academy of Biological Sciences(NABS), Winner of IIGP -2014 Gold Medal and 1.0 Lakh Cash Price From FICCI, India, DBT – Crest Award, Tamil Nadu Scientist Award (TANSA), DBT-overseas fellowship award, TATA INNOVATIVE fellowship award. She also has many publications in International and National Journals and written book chapters. She plays the role of Research Adviser in Research project evaluations of various colleges like VelTech, CSIR, DBT and Ethiraj College. Dr. Gnanamani encouraged the students to do more research by quoting her research experience.
The ceremony ended with the sizziling speech by Dr.Anitha Roy from the department of Pharmacology who gave vote of thanks. As a special gesture the management handed out gifts to all women staff for the institution.

The International women’s day was celebrated on 8th March 2019. The management in co ordination with the women empowerment cell of Saveetha dental college organized numerous activities. As is the norm, women achievers in their respective spheres of life were identified and hand picked for recognition and awards were given away on this day. The event began with a welcome dance by our students and a welcome address by our Dean Dr. Sheeja Varghese. The chief guest of the event was Dr. Kamala Selvaraj, MD, DGO, PhD (Associate director, GG hospital, Chennai -34). She graced the occasion and gave away the awards. She also addressed the gathering and spoke about the health issues women face and advised the young generation about it.
The awards were given to the women achievers by the chief guest, our dean and Prof. Dr. Shyamalaa Chandrasekharan (Dept. of Orthodontics). The first award of the day was the young achiever’s awards and was given to S.R.Tejaswini, studying in 12th Standard in N.S.N. Matriculation School,Chitlapakkam. She was diagnosed with a disability called Osteotomy of Radiusand Ulna only at the age of 6 when she found it difficult to use her right hand for even doing basic activities like eating and writing. She is now a national level para awimmer who has represented India at the Asian Youth para games in 2017 in Dubai where she won silver medal in100 M Breast stroke with 834 points. She charmed the gathering with her wise words and innocent demeanor and urged the audience to dream. She also stressed that it is not what we have but what we do with what we have that matters!
The next award was the Inspiring woman icon award which was given to Ms Kavitha Ramu. An IAS officer by day and a senior Bharatnatyam exponent in the evenings, Ms.Kavitha has been performing as a solo artiste for more than 20 years now, with over 650 stage performances to her credit. Having seen her father serve the country as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Kavitha had always wanted to follow his footsteps. She was initially fascinated by the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) but, over time, decidedon IAS as staying in India meant she could pursue her passion for dance. Some positions she has earlier held include, Joint Commissioner for Relief and Rehabilitation, District Revenue Officer, Chennai dt, and General Manager for the Tamil Nadu State Tourism Development Corporation.Presently she is the Director,dept of Museums. Ms Kavitha Ramu addressed the gathering and spoke about how a little bit of planning and effort form our side can help us pursue our profession and passion simultaneously with great joy.
The next award was the healthcare excellence award and was presented to Dr.Vijayasree Mahadevan for her yeoman service for the poor and needy in the field of cancer care. The founder and managing trustee of sri matha cancer care. To help the people who are in need of the dialysis treatment, Dr. Vijayasree have installed 4 Dialysis unit in their City. In addition to this she wants to create awareness about “Palliative Care” amongst commoners hence she wrote a book called “INI ORU VALIYILLA PAYANAM” (Henceforth a painless Journey) and that book was released by the Governor of Tamil Nadu DR.K.ROSAIAH” on the occasion of world Palliative Care Day. She addressed the gathering and inspired the audience with her speech.
The social activist award was presented to Dr. A.D. Revathy, who commissioned as a member for Tamil Nadu commission for protection of child rights by the governor of Tamil Nadu as an act of implementation of the Central act, She was assigned as a Convener to lead the Tamil Nadu State Child Policy Committee, After Several Steps of Meetings from the level of Secretaries to the District officials and experts consultation meetings, the draft, Tamil Nadu State Policy for Children 2017 was handed over to the Government of Tamil Nadu. In Feb 2017, anational movement, called, CHILD RIGHT INDIA, was successfully started to uphold the rights of children in the nation. She also started an organization, in the name of, TEACHERS OF PHILOSOPHY, on 15th August 2017 for the purpose of upgrading Philosophical studies and investigation among Philosophy academics in Tamil Nadu. She addressed the gathering about the urgent need for a policy for child and women rights and how we need to fight for it collectively as a population.
The women entrepreneur award was presented to Ms Aarthi Anantha Padmanaban,the Founder and Chief Visionary of Youvolve. Youvolve is a coaching, counselling and training company specialising in Leadership training, workplace Communication and etiquette, Assertive skills, Key representational styles and its impact on quality of work.The initiative for required unique Training methodology amalgamating Coaching and Mentoring , grew out of the desire to contribute positively to the realization of the vision and target set by a company or its units. She spoke about the importance of women being self-full and happy with themselves before embarking on any of their other responsibilities.
The last award but by no means the least, for excellence in teaching was presented to Dr. Lalitha Balakrishnan. She is the Principal of M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai, is an Educational Administrator with over 30 years of experience. She is passionate about research and has published in several National and International journals. She has also authored four books in Management. Dr. Lalitha Balakrishnan has been invited by the US Department of State to visit the USA under the prestigious International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). She visited Universities of Stanford, Harvard, Yale in the USA and universities in Sydney, U. K and Vancouver. She has held several leadership positions in her career and has groomed leaders through conduct of Management Development Programs for managers in various MNC’s.To her credit she has won The Best Teacher Award, Bharathi Kanda Pudhumai Penn Award , Eminent Woman Achiever Award , Leadership Excellence award and For the sake of Honor Award. She spoke about the joys of being in her profession and how we should think out of the box and achieve our goals.
The ceremony ended with the vote of thanks by Dr.Anitha Roy from the Pharmacology department. This was followed by another program organized by Dr.Uma Maheswari (Dept of Oral Medicine) and Dr.Brinda (Dept of General Pathology) on general and oral health awareness for Women employeesof the institution. Dr.Sri Sakthi and her team from the department of Public health dentistry organized a screening and oral health awareness camp Mary Clubwala Jadhav Higher Secondary school, Egmore, Chennai wherein 250 children and 15 staff were benefitted.
As a special gesture the management also handed out gifts to all women staff of the institution.

Ms.Lakshmi.T ,Saveetha Dental college organized the International womens day celebration as womens week celebration . International Women's Day basically celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. With regard to this context ,The organizing secretary and the organizing chairman Dr.sheeja Varghese along with the advise of the dynamic director ,Saveetha dental college ,Dr.deepak nallasamy and beloved dean Dr.N.D Jayakumar has felicitated three women achievers in the society with three criteria of awards and honour like Leadership in Healthcare ,Inspiring women award and Women Enterpreneur award.This was initiated first in Saveetha Dental college as a part of women empowerment cell
Founder and chief visionary of YOUVOLVE and as a chief coach and Mentor. She understands and encourages the importance of being happy and just YOU. She is a seasoned Psychologist and Relationship Coach who has helped several individuals, corporate businesses, parents, young adults make the breakthrough in their lives. She is also an ative member of the Rotary club Chennai. Passionate about children and their rights, Aarthi makes herself available to advocate for them, speak on their behalf and works with children on a therapeutic level, believing in making a difference. She also spearheads Enchanting Elves , a holistic school for tiny tots, a place where children can be children and where they can learn, play and share in a loving, caring, protective environment. she is presently working on a project on counseling at Government hospitals for the patients and their families with Rotary and the Government. She looks forward to work intensively with youth and inspiring them more in the future.
A multifaceted personality. A motivational speaker who urges women to be independent. Sumathi is the most sought after lady by womens forums and womens colleges. Her writing skills impelled her to start the first pan-Indian bilingual magazine, called WOMEN EXCLUSIVE. She also helps to educate the underprevileged children through her soulmates foundation and project Vizhigal. She has roped in actor sivakarthikeyan as her goodwill ambassador for her social service activities. Her retail shopping experience, Chennaiyil Angadi Thiruvizha, a unique offline concept has been a big hit. Having been in the media for many years with the Mrs homemaker reality show, the socialite is also entering the film sector with the South Film Festival, which is designed to encourage young talents.
As a part of our celebration, in the history of saveetha Dental college, we felt very happy and pride to announce three special awards for wonderful women who shine in their respective fields inorder to encourage and motivate them to do even more. Dr. Jyostna Murthy (LEADERSHIP IN HEALTHCARE AWARD)
Professor & head, Dept of Plastuc Surgeon and directing the cleft & Craniofacial center at Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute. She has served as a executive member (2001-2004), as honory Secretary (2001-2010) & as president (2016-2017) of Indian Society of Cleft lip, palate & Craniofacial Anomalies. She have been an executive member of Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (2005-2008). She is also an international member of American Society of Cleft Palate & Craniofacial Association and American Society of Maxillofacial surgeons. She was the president of International; Confederation of Cleft Lip, Palate and related Craniofacial Anomalies from 2013-2017 and held First International Cleft Congress in 2017. She has been and International experts for evaluation of cleft centers in various countries. In addition to her professional activities, she spends long hours doing free surgeries for various facial anomalies for poor patients. She has performed more than 10000 free surgeries for the poor patients. She conducted various plastic surgery camps in rural areas for the awareness of the recent available plastic surgeries for various deformities.
Mrs. Ramya Kannan (WOMEN ENTERPRENEUR AWARD)
CEO, the hand behind Hi-Rise Food Tech Lab, an enterprise assessing food quality and control standards. She graduated in Industrial Biotechnology from Anna University, Chennai, but unlike her peers was never interested in biotechnology research. She then joined a Food production & Management course at the prestigious Nottingham University in UK. She also completed the Management programme for Women Enterpreneurs at IIM Banglore, to enhance and build her management capacities. The course played a key role in helping her understand the finger details of planning and starting an enterprise. Her business plan in MPWE was highly appreciated and built her confidence to start even though marketing and finance were significant challenges.
Ms. Sneha Mohandos (INSPIRING WOMEN AWARD)
A 24year old Viscom graduate, Pan India NGO from Chennai has built the life boat change by strtting a drive called Food Bank. Food bank started off as a Facebook group with her close friends and relatives and soon went on to have 8000 members from all over chennai. As a part of the world Food day 2016 celebrations, Sneha organised a massive food distribution event for the homeless and the underprivileged people and has served the society by eradicating hunger making india an hunger free nation.
