Digitalisation of patient records and images especially radiographs and other investigation images helps in data retrieval and also effective patient doctor communication. The software in the HIMS is constantly updated. The patient details in digital format are readily accessible for research projects.
The massive strength of the outpatient and inpatients, the wide exposure each student gets in dealing with cases right from simple to complicated cases makes them competent to deal with patients individually with confidence when they graduate from Saveetha Medical and Dental college. Students start their clinical training right from their first year of medical and dental schooling
There has been a consistent increase in the outpatient and inpatient census since 2016 with an average of more than 3000 patients in medical college hospitals and more than 1000 patients in dental college hospitals. This volume of patient inflow allows exhaustive and very high quality training to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The undergraduate students in dental college campus perform procedures like root canal fillings, implants, orthodontic treatment which is usually done by postgraduates in other colleges. This clinical exposure allows undergraduate students to get moulded into competent dentists and manage patients successfully in private dental practice after graduation. Saveetha Dental College serves also as a tertiary referral centre where very complicated cases from all over the country are referred for surgical and medical management for their diseases. The institute also serves as a centre for providing quality dental care for patients with special needs and disabilities. This unique training for dental students in this area of special needs dentistry has led to societies and organisations caring for disabled and patients with disabilities to refer them to Saveetha institutions for medical and dental care.
The Saveetha medical college hospital with its 1200 beds and more than 3000 patients per day exposes the undergraduate, post graduate and super-speciality students to undergo extensive clinical training. In addition to treating patients in the college hospital campuses, postings at various rural centres and satellite clinics expose them to the disease pattern of patients in rural areas. These postings help the medical students to get well trained in preventive aspects of healthcare management. The holistic approach of patient care training given to students makes patients highly satisfied with the quality of health care delivered.
To further improve patient inflow, enhance the quality of education and training facilities in the medical and dental hospital campus, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences has currently spent ₹1300 crores on patient welfare to improve the quality and quantity of health care delivery to society. This includes ₹613 crores towards free surgeries and ₹587 crores towards dental treatment. As an incentive to encourage meritorious students to perform better, scholarship and financial aid of ₹27 crores is used. To reduce the economic burden of patients, 10.4 crores has been spent to supply free food to the patients in addition to the free treatment. In the dental hospital, 9 crores has been spent till date to offer implant based prosthesis to patients to improve their oral health and quality of life. To create social awareness in disease prevention, 12 crores has been spent. These measures will definitely further increase the outpatient and inpatient census, offer sophisticated state of training to our medical and dental trainees. These service measures will certainly contribute towards healthy nation building .

The education system in Saveetha University has been completely revamped to integrate the use of digital devices to make learning easier as well as convenient through the entire course duration. To accomplish this, we have provided around 2600 iPads to our students to access course content for multiple subjects without having to carry books for each subject. We have prepared approximately 1000 iBooks modules and uploaded them to the iTunes U portal so that every student throughout our campus can access the lecture content at their behest.
Another feather in our cap is the ARMS system (Academic Record Management System) implemented in 2017 where the student attendance, academic performance, internal assessment grades are recorded and used to generate their digital no dues for exam eligibility at the end of the year.
The digital progression at Saveetha University has extended into the clinical side as well with the use of our DIAS software (Dental Information Archival Software). Our proprietary software allows our students to record patient details and treatment procedures in a swift comprehensive manner and our teaching faculty can monitor the student’s progress with each procedure at any time.
With our ARMS and DIAS systems, we also claim the honour of being the First University in India to shift to a completely paperless record management system thereby emphasizing our conformation with the Green Initiative and the National ‘Swacchh Bharath’ Program.
The successful implementation of so many digital services is not possible without a strong IT infrastructure within the University. The IT team at Saveetha has updated our intranet facilities to 7 AAA servers out of a total 25 servers with 3 leased lines of upto 1000 MBPS cumulative bandwidth (made possible by a partnership with BSNL, Vodafone™ India in 2018) throughout the entire university. A dedicated team of 25 IT professionals are on-site at all times to maintain data stability as well as to troubleshoot any possible issues. Another radical change is our shift to a Circular Fibre Channel throughout various buildings within the campus with a two-way stream such that any interruption in data transfer does not affect the server stability at any time.
Our IT team also includes Video Editors and a 3D model designer with sophisticated software such as Final Cut Pro and Autodesk Maya to produce in-house educational content for our 1000 iBooks modules and flipped class lectures.
There are 3210 computers (400 PCs of which were purchased in 2018 alone) and 100 smart TVs to provide a completely linked campus. A fully functional biometric system is used to accurately track staff and student attendance with 60 biometric scanners installed at vantage access points. To provide a highly secure campus, 300 surveillance cameras and 40 TV monitors with backup servers are installed all across the campus. A fully functional desktop publishing unit is present in the campus to facilitate academic printing work of the staff and students.

4.4.4: Facilities for e-content development such as Media centre, audio visual centre, Lecture Capturing System (LCS), etc.,
Knowledge is an ever-evolving entity in today’s digitally connected world. Every minute of each day is filled with new discoveries and changes to paradigms once thought as constant. To accommodate such rapid changes and discoveries, teachers need to update their knowledge and deliver them in a convenient yet precise manner to their students.
Our University exercises such teaching methods using our exclusive e-content development centres. The fastest yet reliable method to teach students and ensure understanding is through the use of audiovisual content to appeal to their sense of interest and to thoroughly engage their attention. We have 9 content creation centres in our University to enable our faculty to develop our own verified scientific content to teach in our classroom session.
Each content creation centre is equipped with a desktop computer system which contains content creation software such as iMovie and Final cut pro to enable creation of audiovisual content. We also have 4 background props set up to enable shooting videos with a clear background along with 3 sets of lighting equipment for a professional output. We have 3 graphic designers to create illustrations and graphic depictions as well as 2 video editors for catering to our video content. We are equipped with one 3D Model designer for designing our own animations and prototypes of our patent designs. Another addition to our media center is an advanced 3D printer to fabricate models to be used for educational purposes.
Our media centre also houses 2 Professional Microphones to record audio for our proprietary video content. Other notable equipment are our Digital SLR camera and Video Camcorder to shoot our own photos and videos and accessories such as 2 sets of tripods and flash units. We are also equipped with 2 light tents for close up photography of objects using a macro lens.
Every faculty is trained to author their own e-content using the iBooks platform using the iTunes Author software. The custom made e-content is distributed through the iBooks application and can be accessed by every student using their iPad units. Around 2600 iPads have been provided for students which enable them to access their lecture content at any time of their convenience.
In addition to these facilities, each media centre system is installed with Panopto basic software as a default lecture capture system. This allows faculty to record their classroom sessions and enables capture of videos to upload in our online learning management systems, Schoology & iBooks. These lectures serve to provide educational content for online sessions and were beneficial particularly during the lockdown period.
Overall, our media centres are fully equipped to create any form of audiovisual content at our own convenience in order to keep up with the constant flow of information and updates in today’s networked world.
